Potential for Additional Costs
The overview above is based on each party having one, one-on-one session with the mediator and one joint mediation session.
In some cases it may be beneficial to have additional one-on-one sessions, or have additional joint sessions. In these cases, the additional sessions are billed at the mediator's hourly rate.
If you involve other professionals in your divorce, such as attorneys, therapists, or financial professionals, those professionals must be paid separately.
Potential for Lower Costs
In some cases the overall cost of divorce may be lower. For example, if you and your spouse / former partner do not have children, have relatively few assets to divide, and do not require one-on-one sessions with the mediator, the cost could be significantly reduced.
During your initial consultation, your mediator can help you assess the possible overall cost in your scenario.
Payment Schedule
Payment for each session is made when you schedule that session. Each party pays separately for their initial one-on-one session.
After the initial one-on-one sessions, you will schedule a joint session. Each party will pay a minimum deposit for the joint session, which covers the first 2 hours. If the session goes longer than 2 hours, the parties will equally share the remaining bill at the end of the session.
After you've reached an agreement, you will pay a flat fee for the preparation and filing of divorce documents with the Courts.
See the Detailed Pricing Page for more information.
Parties who use mediation to complete their divorces typically spend about $2,000-$2,500 total. This includes mediation, drafting your agreement, and finalizing the agreement with the Courts.
If you require additional mediation sessions, you can book more time with your mediator at the end of your first session.
Yes. For joint sessions, both parties pay a deposit that covers the first 2 hours of mediation. If the session lasts longer than 2 hours, the remainder will be billed at the end.
Yes. If you cancel your appointment with at least two week's notice, your entire deposit will be refunded. If you cancel with at least one week's notice, half of your deposit will be refunded. If you cancel with less than one week's notice, the deposit will not be refunded.
The process of mediation allows you to skip many of the steps required in a traditional divorce, such as serving a petition to the other side, doing formal discovery, and holding a trial. Because the process of mediation has relatively few steps and is much less time consuming, the cost is significantly lower.
