If you're looking at getting in divorce in Utah, there are three basic approaches you can take, each with thier own pros and cons.
1. Do-it-Yourself (DIY)
The Utah Courts provide a free, online program for completing your divorce by yourself. You won't receive any legal guidance. However, if your case is very simple and you feel comfortable using online software, the Courts program can be a great way to complete your divorce simply and affordably.
Your only fee will be the Court's mandatory filing fee of $333, unless you qualify for a waiver.

2. Mediation
Mediation blends affordability with professional guidance. Your mediator can help explain legal concepts, provide useful information about divorce, and help guide the conversation between you and your partner / ex. The mediator cannot give legal advise. However, they can share insights and experiences they've gained from other cases to help give you perspective and things to consider.
The overal cost of a mediated through our process is approximately $1,500-$3,000, depending on how many sessions of mediation you use and which professional you choose to work with.
Note: If you choose the mediation path, you can still consult with attorneys and receive legal advice as needed. Choosing mediation does not prohibit you from receiving legal advice.

3. Hiring an Attorney
The third option for managing your divorce process is hiring an attorney. Your attorney will manage the divorce process for you, provide you with legal advice, and represent you at each step along the way.
When choosing an attorney, it's important to find someone who shares your values. Are you seeking an amicable divorce and you want an attorney to help you stay calm and negotiate, or are you in a situation involving physical or mental safety and you need an advocate with experience in those areas? Whatever your situation, its important to find an attorney who will share and honor your goals.
Many attorneys charge $5,000-$10,000 for their initial retainer, and costs can increase depending on if the case proceeds to trial. However, a number of attorneys in Utah offer a-la-carte services or discounted rates, depending on your circumstances.
